Law Years (Ornette Coleman, Science Fiction, 1971)

Law Years has been a favorite since college days in the 70’s. It appears on the eclectic (and sometimes maligned) Science Fiction album, but is a throwback to Coleman’s roots, a simple melody performed by the pianoless quartet that caused the stir at the Five Spot a decade earlier, augmented here by Dewey Redman on tenor and with Bobby Bradford subbing for Don Cherry on trumpet. Charlie Haden’s bravura, flamenco-inflected bass intro never fails to draw me in, and Redman’s solo is classic.

But the title has special resonance for me today, because after 24 years as a practicing attorney, followed by 14 years as a federal judge, my law years are over. I have hung up my robe and pinstripe suits to focus on other interests, including the music which has captivated me since late adolescence. I approach jazz as a curious listener, and will try to share my enthusiasms in a fresh, interesting way. I expect that, in time, I will incorporate photographs, audio clips, etc., but until I figure out how to do that (legally!) my words will have to suffice. Stay tuned!
